British filmmaker of Indian origin Gurinder Chadha of "Bend It Like Beckham" fame may end up directing former One Direction band member Zayn Malik sometime in the future.

"We've met and spoken. He trained as an actor first then became part of the band. So I think what he'll be doing is staying true to his heart - and that's all you can ever do," mirror.co.uk quoted Chadha as saying.

The 55-year-old is currently occupied with the production of "Bend It Like Beckham: The Musical".

Malik, who left One Direction only last month, may now be planning a career as a movie star.

But Chadha, who was present last week at the Asian Awards, also attended by Malik, said: "I don't have a part in mind for Zayn just yet but hopefully in the future."
