Director: Vikram Grover
Rating: ***1/2
Our expectations from our kids are so high that we want them to be a jack of all trades and master of none, instead of understanding their potential we force them to pursue careers of our choices and seldom care about their ambitions.
Son of Manjeet Singh revolves around the life of Manjeet Singh (Gurpreet Ghuggi) and his teenage kids Jaiveer (Damanpreet Singh) and Simran (Tania). A story of a debt-ridden poor father who gives his best to his kids and is raising his kids single-handedly after their mother passes away.
Jaiveer aka Jaivi wants to be a cricketer. He doesn't have any interest in studies but excels in sports, specifically in cricket. Jaivi's father Manjeet Singh wants him to be a successful person but don't want him to pursue his cricketing career. With the peer pressure from his father and school teachers Jaivi gives up his passion for cricket and starts studies.
A fatal mishap changes everything. What happens next is an emotional series of events. There are a few moments which might bring tears to your eyes and there are moments to cheer you up. Some special moments of father and son, are a treat to watch.
All the performances by the various characters are up to the mark. Gurpreet Ghuggi is one of the finest actors of Punjabi film industry and he has proven it time and again. In Son of Manjeet Singh, he has delivered a performance which will be remembered for a long time. Damanpreet Singh as Jaiveer Singh and Tania as Simran, both are effective.
Karamjit Anmol as Mehta (Manjeet's colleague), Japji Khaira as the neighbour, have played their part brilliantly. B.N. Sharma as a money launder who is all money minded but when it comes to emotions he is beyond imagination.
Son of Manjeet Singh enlightens us with the various social issues, the corrupt education system, manipulative school management and few teachers who want to make money by offering private tuitions. Our society's poor mindset about artists and performers, especially girls.
Son of Manjeet Singh really awakens us and compels us to think about our kids with a different approach that rather than forcing our dreams on them let's try to fulfil their dreams. It's not wrong to think about their better future but it should not be at the cost of their happiness.
All the things go in favour of the film still there are few drawbacks which could have been avoided.
The narrative is good but the execution is weak. There are few scenes in the film where cameraman lose his control.
Being a debutant director Vikram Grover has done a good job despite being his debut movie he has handled the project very wisely.
The climax of the movie was bit overstretched and editor should have done his job more accurately. It could be better.
Overall Son of Manjeet Singh is a good film in terms of spreading awareness and giving a message to society to change their mindset. A film everyone should watch which conveys the clear message to all the parents and to the society that let's change our mindset and our approach.
