The Accidental Prime Minister has been based on the book `The Accidental Prime Minister - The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh` by Sanjaya Baru. Sanjaya served as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh`s media advisor and the chief spokesperson from May 2004 until August 2008.

Anupam Kher will be seen playing the character of Dr. Manmohan Singh and Akshaye Khanna is essaying the role of Sanjaya Baru. Suzanne Bernert will be seen as former Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Arjun Mathur has played Rahul Gandhi and Aahana Kumra will be seen as Priyanka Gandhi.
