Taking a cue from the recent Bollywood blockbuster "Lage Raho Munna Bhai", police in Madhya Pradesh have adopted 'Gandhigiri' to teach people a lesson or two about traffic rules.

Traffic police in Indore and Mandsaur districts of the state are not penalising the violators during the ongoing traffic week. They are being given flowers instead.

Along with flowers, the violators are told about the risks involved in not following traffic rules and punishment thereof. They are then let off with lessons about on-road safety.

"Trespassers are being identified and presented roses," said Indore zone Inspector General of Police Rajendra Kumar, adding that the gesture was to send across a message with an appeal to obey traffic rules.

"After presenting the rose, people are being asked what they had gained by breaking traffic rules and what were the risks involved. They are also being told about road safety," he said.

In Mandsaur district, the police have, however, gone a step ahead. Those found abiding by the rules are given toffees.

"Apart from giving flowers to those found violating traffic rules, we have started distributing toffees to those following them, including auto drivers in uniform," said traffic official Sunil Talan.

Traffic week is being observed in Madhya Pradesh from Jan 3 involving various traffic awareness programmes.
