The Congress party Saturday said it would not field a candidate against Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt if he contested from Lucknow.

"If Sanjay Dutt contests from Lucknow, we will not put up a candidate against him, " Digvijay Singh, Congress general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh, told reporters here in response to a question.

Dutt, son of late film legends Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt, has been convicted of possessing arms illegally ahead of the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts and has been sentenced to six years in jail.

He is currently on bail and has moved the Supreme Court seeking suspension of his conviction in order to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections as a Samajwadi Party candidate.
