Hierarchical discrimination prevails in Bollywood. Not only do the the scions and heir-apparents of film empires get preferential
treatment, outsiders, meaning those actors who don't belong to film families, are often treated as second-class citizens in our film
industry.
This, the brilliant actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui discovered when the actor's wife approached two designers, Naresh Rohira and Rahul
Awasthi to design clothes for his Cannes visit.
The two designers, apparently, refused to design Nawazuddin's clothes for Cannes.
Reluctant to speak on the sour experience the actor says, "I don't want to take names. But it's true. My wife approached two
designers. They both refused. That's okay. I am sure they had good reason to turn me down. I am not a glamorous star. There is
no challenge or fun in dressing me up. "
Nawazuddin is more concerned about his wife being snubbed.
"She is not clued into the ways of the film industry. She was baffled when these designers refused to do my clothes. But we both
want to forgive and forget the incident. I found another designer Reema Malhotra to do my clothes.
I am very happy to
wear whatever I've been given. I have two films in competitive sections at the Cannes. For me it is enough to know I am being
recognized for my acting. It isn't important for me to be known by clothes. "
Having made the statement Nawazuddin blurts out, "Bahut kuch jhlena padta hai iss industry mein (one has to bear with a lot in
this industry). I've been in this industry for years.
Only now I am getting some recognition. Maybe next year if I've to
go to Cannes the same designers who said no to my wife will come forward to do my clothes. "
