Popular soap television actress and star campaigner of BJP, Smriti Irani, has reportedly lodged a First Information Report (FIR) with a police station complaining of having received threats over the telephone.

"I have been getting threatening calls since two or three weeks. Initially I thought somebody was doing this owing to professional jealousy," Smriti said.

She added that the threats had taken a communal tinge over the last two days.

Irani became a household name after her role of an ideal bahu (daughter-in-law) in the popular TV serial, Kyonki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi .

The serial, which went on air in 2000-01, is a product of the Mumbai-based ‘Balaji Telefilms' owned by film actor Jeetendra and his daughter. ‘Balaji Telefilms' is one of the biggest and most successful production houses in the Indian showbiz industry and makes serials in several languages.

Apart from Kyonki Saas bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi , its other famous television family soaps are Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki and Kkusum.

Irani was selected as the BJP's candidate from the Chandni Chowk constituency in Delhi and was pitted against Kapil Sibal of the Congress, who is now the country's Minister of State for Science and Technology (Independent charge).
