Actress is a part of first anniversary commemoration events for Delhi gang rape survivor

Swara Bhaskar is back in her hometown New Delhi on a break from her film commitments. The Raanjhanaa and Tanu Weds Manu actress is a member of the Mumbai-based theatre and music group, Swaang, whose members take up issues through skits and songs.

The group is part of the week-long events in commemoration of the first anniversary of Nirbhaya, the December 16 2012 gang rape survivour. Swara has decided to be an active leader in the campaign which includes singers, lyricists and theatre folk.

Says Swara, `Jurrat is an endeavour to mark one year of Nirbhaya's fight and to keep her story and memory alive. It is also to keep alive and stand in solidarity with the ordeal and fight of the countless other Nirbhayas.`

She adds, `There is a line in Swaang's protest song Maa Nee Meri made after the incident that says 'Un chhe mein shaamil tum bhi thhey'... Jurrat aims to fight our own complacency as a society and people and not allow Nirbhaya's fight and ordeal to fade into a crime-record-statistic. Our collective effort is to bring like-minded artists and intellectuals together for this effort.

Swara will also be part of the cultural performances and interactions on the issues at different venues in Delhi. A music concert featuring protest songs will map the route taken by Nirbhaya and her friend on the evening of December 16.
