Both the Bollywood releases, 'Sholay 3D' and 'Mr Joe B Carvalho', witnessed tepid response at the box-office

Ramesh Sippy's Sholay 3D has collected approximately Rs 6 crore in the first weekend, but the other release, the Arshad Warsi-starrer Mr Joe B Carvalho, has been a complete disaster at the box office with a collection of less than Rs 2crore.

Exhibitors feel that Sholay 3D has not really caught the fancy of the younger generation. Only the older ones are venturing into cinemas to watch the 1975 classic.

Manoj Desai of G-7 multiplex says, `The occupancy in my cinema halls was less on Friday, but it picked up on Saturday and Sunday and dropped again on Monday. Only those who are very nostalgic about the film are coming to watch it.`'

Interestingly, non-Hindi films have performed well at the box office. The Marathi film, Timepass, and the Hollywood release, The Wolf Of Wall Street, are breaking records at the box office as the Hindi films have disappointed the audiences.

Trade analyst Amod Mehra adds, `Timepass has replaced Mr Joe B Carvalho in many cinema halls of Maharashtra in less than a week's time.`

Over the years, the first week of January has been considered a jinx for Bollywood. Vishal Anand of Fun Cinemas says, `The first weekend collection has been really dismal with none of the Hindi films working. While The Wolf Of Wall Street has collected about Rs 4 crore, Timepass made an admirable business of approximately Rs 6 crore.`

Trade pundits feel collections of Sholay 3D is much below expectation. Though there are some who argue that it is being played on television all the time, there are others who say that classics should not be touched. Mehra agrees by saying, `Classics are pure and should not be tampered with. It hurts the audiences of that film. Sholay 3D for me is like a remix song which lost its originality.`

Meanwhile, Dhoom 3 continues to send cash registers ringing with the numbers standing at Rs 257 crore in the third week of its release.
