Actor Rahul Khanna, who has been away from the big screen for the last five years, says he does not maintain a low-profile consciously but takes up projects only if he connects with them.

The 42-year-old actor, who made his Bollywood debut with Deepa Mehta's 'Earth', has starred in films like 'Bollywood/Hollywood', 'Dil Kabaddi' and 'Elaan' among others.

He was last seen in a cameo role in Ranbir Kapoor starrer 'Wake Up Sid' in 2009. "Doing a movie is like a short-term marriage and, like being married to someone you are deeply in love with, as an actor, there is an incomparable joy that comes from working on a project you truly connect with.

"I try and strive for that as much as possible in my choices and look for material and teams that I know I will enjoy working with, and thus be able to give my best," Rahul told PTI in an email interview.

Further explaining the reason of his long hiatus, the actor said, "I guess that's just the way it turned out. I had been slated to be a part of a couple of movie projects which, unfortunately, didn't end up working out." The actor, who is making a comeback with upcoming indie drama film 'Fireflies' opposite Monica Dogra, is ecstatic about the movie.

"The film is a lyrical 'mood-piece'. There are no thrilling plot twists or big action sequences. It's a simple, poignant story about love, loss and redemption.

"It's set between Bombay today and the tea plantations of Ooty in the 1980s and centers around two brothers and a tragic incident from their childhood that has coloured their relationship all their lives. I play the elder brother who's a big, city investment banker," said Rahul.

The actor said that he was attracted to the project as this was his first indie film. "It was something I'd never really done before an independent film in the purest sense of the term. Director, Sabal Shekawat was clear that he wanted to make this movie on his own terms so he produced it himself, which takes immense courage," he said.

Fireflies' will hit the theatres on October 31.
