Kalki Koechin's upcoming movie, Margarita With A Straw, has a lot of DU in it. Laila, Kalki's character in the movie, is a DU student with cerebral palsy who later goes to study at New York University. Some of the scenes in the movie have been shot at Miranda House, and students as well as a teacher from the university have played roles in the movie.

Kuljeet Singh, who teaches English Literature at SGTB Khalsa College, is playing Balraj Kapoor, Kalki Koechin's father, in the movie. He says, "My character comes from a middle class family. He is a Sikh gentleman, married to a Marathi woman. He is a disciplinarian, sort of conservative, and is a happy person in general. But soon after, his wife (played by Revathi) convinces him to let his daughter go to New York to study."

Talking about the shoot, he says, "A four-five day shoot at SRCC was planned, but we didn't get permission. So, we shot the DU scenes at Miranda, which is shown as a co-ed college in the movie. Laila gets little or no acceptance as a disabled student at DU, so she goes away to NYU. Shonali Bose, the director of the movie, is a DU alumna," adding, "Kalki is a very, very sensitive actor. I have played small roles in only a handful of movies, but both Revathi and Kalki are established artistes."

Tenzin Dalha, a third-year political science student at Ramjas college, plays one of Kalki's love interests in the movie. He says, "I play the lead vocalist of the band in Laila's college. He's a guy from Assam and when Laila comes to college, I am the guy she falls in love with. She even writes a song for me in Assamese. There's a scene where I am studying in the library and Kalki comes in. She speaks very loudly, everybody shushes her, and I, too, have to apologize to everybody on her behalf." Telling us about the college Laila belongs to, he adds, "Although the movie has been shot at Miranda, which is where Shonali Bose (the director) studied, I think they mean to show Ramjas."

Tenzin says, "When our band in the movie wins a competition, the name announced is Ramjas College. The movie was shot when we were in our first-year, and we didn't really show her around the campus, but she took us to Hauz Khas for dinner after the shoot was done."

Shuchi Dwivedi, an LSR alumna, plays Kalki's best friend and is also the bass player in the band in the movie. Shuchi says, "Laila makes Sameera, my character, do bada** things in the movie. She makes me sneak inside the classroom to get attendance. Generally, disabled students in the university are looked at with sympathy, but Laila and Sameera just click, there's no sympathy. Blame it on lack of funds or lack of initiative, DU's environment is still not perfect for disabled students. But that's not the only reason Laila goes to NYU. She goes because, well, everybody wants to go to NYU and she is smart enough to get through." KMC student Prabhtoj Singh and KMC alumna Shankul Pratap Singh also play band members in the movie. Prabhtoj says, "My role is kind of small, but it was a lot of fun. I play a DU-based guitarist in the movie, so I basically do on screen what I do in real life. When I first saw Kalki on the wheelchair, I couldn't recognize her - she was so into her character."
