Miss Hawaii
Pilialoha Kalai Gaison
What is your hometown like?
Kaneohe, located on the windward side of Oahu, is a small but snazzy little town, with only a handful of buildings taller than two stories high. The pristine, lush green Koolau Mountains comfort you as the beauty of the crystal clear bay just a few miles away captivates your soul. There is a comfortable feeling about my hometown everywhere you go, and you are bound to know someone.
What were you like when you were a child?
I was a tomboy. I struggled to be the leader of my three brothers while trying to retain my feminine side. Also, I guess you could say I was the curious little one who was always tempted to push the limits. I wasn't naughty. I was just curious.
Who is the most influential person in your life?
My mother. She is a woman of strength, courage, dignity and selflessness. Her priorities take a back seat to the needs of others. She is my biggest supporter and my best friend.
What is one thing about you that people you meet may not immediately realize?
I wear a size 9 shoe and I'm only 5' 4". It's all right though. I've got great balance.
What was one defining moment in your life?
Being crowned Miss Hawaii was a defining moment for me. After it began to settle in, I realized that hard work and perseverance pays off. I understand that I could not have done it all on my own, and I am so grateful for the support team I have. Miss Hawaii is not only a title but a cherished tradition in the community, and I found that I immediately became a role model for the children of Hawaii. I vow to make my family, my friends, my supporters and all of Hawaii proud to have a young, educated and cultured woman represent our state.
What was one defining moment in your life?
I honestly believe that a pageant is truly a competition against one's self. It is an event that initiates change and personal growth. It is a period of preparation that helps you to discover who you really are, what you stand for and which direction you will choose for your life.
What was one defining moment in your life?
As Miss America, I will promote this organization by raising awareness of what the program has to offer young women. It is the largest provider for scholarships for women in the nation. It is an opportunity for young ladies to educate themselves, promote higher education, get involved and be committed to community service. I will remind America that Miss America is a young woman who embodies these values. She is strong and sound, direct yet delicate, intelligent and elegant, a passionate and compassionate woman with no limits.
I will also continue to be an advocate for leadership education beginning with our youth. My platform will teach them the importance of choosing good role models and leaders as well as how to become those leaders for their generation.
