Kate Winslet |
Kate Elizabeth Winslet was born in a family of artists on October 5, 1975. She was raised in Leading, Berkshire, England and was the second of four children.
Kate was naturally talented as her lineage shows. Her maternal grandparents ran the Reading Repertory Theatre, her uncle was in the London's West End
theater and her parents Roger and Sally were both stage actors.
She followed in the family footsteps at age 11, when she began studying drama. She
made her professional debut on television as a spokes child for a popular British cereal and went on to attend a performing-arts high
school. This was followed by appearances in television series; Casualty, Dark Season, Get
Back, and Anglo-Saxon Attitudes.
She had to battle a weight problem and depression. At age 15, standing 5'6", Kate weighed as much as 185 lb. and was nicknamed
Blubber in high
school. Inspite of all these obstacles, this hazel eyed libran was determined to be an actress.
Kate's break came when she was cast as Juliet Hulme in the critically-acclaimed movie
Heavenly Creatures. Her debut won her New Zealand Film and Television
Award, Toronto Film Festival Award, and Empire Magazine Award.
Screenwriter and producer Emma Thompson, cast her at first sight for the role of Marianne in the movie
Sense and Sensibility in which Kate earned herself an even greater accolade of a
Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination from the Academy.
She continued to receive good reviews the following year for her roles in Jude and Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of
Hamlet but she did not strike gold till her major movie break in 1997 opposite
Leonardo di caprio in James Cameron's Titanic. Nominated for an Oscar for her performance, Winslet became the youngest actress to garner her second Oscar
nomination. Kate unfortunately turned down the Gwyneth Paltrow role in Shakesepeare in Love (1998) and the Jodie Foster role in Anna and the King (1999).
Kate starred in some smaller films, such as, Hideous Kinky set in Morocco and then in
Holy Smoke opposite Harvey
Keitel. In 1998 she married James Threapleton, whom she met on the set of Hideous Kinky,
1998; the pair had a daughter, Mia, in October of 2000. The marriage did not last long and in 2001 she started dating dating American Beauty director
Sam Mendes. She also Won a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album for Children,
2000.

sex. After that, Winslet was once again in the spotlight for her Oscar nominated performance as a youthful Iris Murdoch in director
Richard Eyre's Iris.
Hollywood has given her the nickname English Rose. And Kate also holds a unique position in Academy Awards history. Only twice have two actresses being nominated for playing the same role in the same film. The first was
