Joan grew up with her family in a small town called Mamelodi, in Pretoria, and is currently staying in Johannesburg. Having completed her matric certificate she went on to study Public Relations & Business Communications at College. After which she worked as a Manager at a clothing store and a volunteer at a place called NAPWA (a national association for people living with HIV/AIDS). She is currently enjoying her year as Miss South Africa. Her ambition is to become a successful business woman and run her own business in corporate clothing and events management.. Joan enjoys: Horse-riding, tennis, netball reading, dancing especially ballroom and the traditional "sotho" dance. Her motto is "The sky is the limit. Dream big as everything is achievable".
Where did you grow up? Tell us a little about your home town/city, and family.
In a small town called Mamelodi which is in Pretoria, the capital city of South Africa. I grew up with two sisters and one brother. Both my parents raised us. My family is my greatest support structure.
What Jobs have you done? What was the most interesting/bizarre?
I used to work as a manager at a clothing store. I was a volunteer at a place called NAPWA, which is for the national association for people living with HIV/AIDS.
What are your career ambitions, how do you plan to realise them?
To make a difference in people’s lives and to become a famous successful businesswoman. I am going to further my studies by obtaining a degree in MBA.
What is the proudest moment of your life? (Not including winning your National Title)
The day I decided to start my own business in corporate clothing and events management. It was a great challenge and also very fulfilling in terms of personal and career growth.
What was the funniest/most embarrassing moment of your life?
The day my friends and I decided to ride on bicycles and we were riding them so fast and I couldn’t control my bike. I fell and broke my tooth and everyone was just laughing at me.
What was the funniest/most embarrassing moment of your life?
With my national title came a lot of changes, the respect I get from people and also the career opportunities that comes with it. Basically my life is not normal anymore, it has changed for the better.
Tell us about an interesting event you have attended, or a person that you have met.
The day I spent with kids that have terminal illnesses. I gave them a makeover and taught them about deportment. It was such a special moment for me and for them.
What would you like to do, if you became Miss World 2004?
I would use my crown to make a difference in people’s lives, especially all the children that are terminally ill. I would also like to better the situation of poverty all over the world.
If you had a personal motto what would it be?
The sky is the limit. Dream big and your dreams will be achievable.
Give details of any charitable work undertaken?
I work with children that are infected with the HIV/AIDS. I help raise funds for charity homes that need financial support.
