He asserts that more than chemistry with Deepika, he was concerned about finding "a common thing between the two to bond over".
"More than the chemistry (between Deepika and me in the film) I was concerned whether we will have something common between us where we can bond," the actor told reporters here Tuesday at the unveiling of the 'Piku Melange Collection', an ethnic fusion collection from Melange by clothing brand Lifestyle.
"I still remember her first reaction after our first shot and I was pleasantly surprised. I was sure that something is going to happen. So I had a great time working with her," he added.
This is the first time that Irrfan and Deepika will be seen together on screen.
Talking about the experience of working with her, he said: "It was fantastic working with her. She is very excited about exploring her other side, which is more of a character rather than just glamour. She is very driven towards it."
Directed by Shoojit Sircar, "Piku" explores the relationship of a father and a daughter. Releasing on May 8, it also features megastar Amitabh Bachchan.
