He adds that while siblings Zoya and Farhan, Priyanka and her mother Madhu Chopra and Shefaili and husband Vipul Shah paired up for a promotional video for the film, he couldn't persuade his wife Sunita to break her three decade-no- interview rule. "Rhea is also publicity-shy like her mother, Sonam's focussed on Neerja and Harsh is under contract with Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra. So I faced the camera alone, that's my status in my family." Anil says with a self- depreciating laugh. Reema Kagti who's directed the film was asked to show him going from room to room, begging his family to team up with him because "Mera career ka ka sawaal hai' but no one does. "I won't give up. Koshish jaari rahegi, may be one day..." he trails off in hope.
According to him while a Godfather like patriarch would appeal to only a niche audience, the appeal of Zoya's patriarch is pan-India, cutting across masses and classes like a good family film."I've delivered many such hits in the past, including 'Woh Saat Din', 'Saheb', 'Beta', 'Lamhe' and 'Ghar Ho To Aisa'," he asserts.
Meanwhile, he's hoping to get the desi adaptation of the popular American sitcom, Modern Family, rolling by the year end. "I want the best people on board. Even if I don't make money, like 24 I won't cut corners," promises the actor- producer who isn't sure if there's a role for him in this 'family'.
But he's definitely returning in season two of the TV series, '24', which should roll in August, and will keep him busy for around 10 months which is why he's reading scripts but not accepting roles. "I may not be shooting in LA but I have to maintain the same standard with both 'Modern Family' and '24'. The fight is to add to the numbers without compromising on the DNA of the shows. Right now I'm struggling but 24 will pay back in the long run, maybe from the third season onwards," he muses.
While on the family, he was in LA recently to dub for Family Guy. He admits that it was his son, daughters and also nephew Arjun Kapoor who made him realise that being on the adult animated show was special. "When my manager sent me links of Brad Pitt and Matt Damon's guest appearances, I thought if they did it, I should too," he says. The episode should air in 2016.
Anil is yet to see the 'face' of the character he lent his voice to. "They create the caricature depending on the voice and will tweak it many times till the episode airs," he explains. "I had nothing to lose, I had fun and made everyone laugh." Did he feel like a Hollywood star in LA? Anil retorts, "I feel like a Bollywood star anywhere in the world." Jhakaaaas!
