The Cannes Film Festival is as famous for movies as fashion with constant scrutiny on who wore what. With stars donning couture that ranged from outrageous and over-the-top to break-the-rules and glamorous chutzpah, the vanguard of fashion was quick to attack and uphold all the glamour on the red carpet as well as off it. hitlist takes a look at the hits and misses this year...
Droolworthy
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
There's one thing unique to Ash. She was the first Indian actress to walk the red carpet at Cannes. And after quite a few misses, she's got it right and how! The former beauty queen was seen strutting her stuff in this dramatic and stunning Ralph and Russo number that spelt couture in all its glory.
Naomi Watts
She togged up in a blue-ash embroidered sequined plus pearl and feather bodice Elie Saab number on the red carpet and proved that the look can be a huge hit if worn well. Perhaps Sonam Kapoor could take a cue?
Lupita Nyong'o
Few have made a mark in the world of fashion as quickly as this actress. From the word go she has stunned us with her red carpet choices, and we absolutely love this green number and updo which she sported with complete elan.
Cate Blanchett
A one hundred per cent bona fide diva, she looked sensational in this Giles psychedelic gown with her blonde tresses pulled up in a loose bun.
Rachel Weisz
When the Youth actress walked in wearing that long sleeve, teal satin Prada gown, she made the fashion police sit up and take notice. Not another couture piece, this had drama and elegance from the 1940's written all over it.
Charlize Theron
She has always been an absolute knockout on the red carpet. And she proved that yet again in this stunner of a Gucci gown that she wore to the Mad Max premiere.
Never Mind
Tilda Swinton
Not quite sure what the veteran actress was thinking when she decided to wear this. She did redeem herself majorly when she wore a stunner of a gown later.
Katrina Kaif
An American tabloid labelled Katrina's first ever red carpet appearance as 'awful'. What exactly were the stylists thinking? The actress later wore a red Elie Saab gown with a red belt along with a striking red lipstick and red hair. Was there no other colour in the world, Kat?
Sienna Miller
She brought her colourful self to Cannes looking as cute as a button. Unfortunately, her look seemed more of tacky and less of couture, as if it were inspired by a child's kite flying adventure.
Bjork
What a cute birthday cake! Oh wait, it's Bjork. And while we are not surprised to see the talented singer turn up in an outrageous looking outfit, which is her trademark style, we wish she'd taken the red carpet a bit more seriously.

The best dressed from the Bollywood brigade would undoubtedly be Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. I'd rate her as 10 on 10 since she was flawless on the red carpet and her hair, make-up and pose were to the T.
Shilpa Reddy
I am glad Richa Chadda opted for a saree. It was simple and elegant. I wish more Indian celebs would opt for sarees as they really accentuate an Indian silhouette.
Jyoti Sachdev Iyer
Oscar De La Renta's work was outstanding this year. Even though Elie Saab has been a personal favourite, his design for Sonam Kapoor was an absolute letdown.
