City crime branch had on Monday arrested one person allegedly involved in issuing the threat. Unconfirmed sources said a male playback singer, who once used to anchor a music talent contest on TV, had also received threats from the underworld during this time, but senior police officials have refused to confirm it.
Mehta, who is known for his films bhawani bhawai, mirch masala, maya memsaab, sardar and the recent Aamir Khan starrer mangal pande received threats from Dubai-based gangster Chhota Shakeel, sources said.
Police found out about the threat not from Mehta, but from their electronic surveillance on Shakeel and other underworld figures, sources added. Mumbai Police Commissioner, AN Roy confirmed that Mehta received threats, but said it was not about extortion money.
Mehta received a call three weeks ago in which the caller threatened him in connection with shows that Bollywood personalities regularly hold in other countries, Roy said, but refused to elaborate on the identity of the caller.
Roy said that the threat appears to have come not from any overseas underworld gang, but from a local connection, adding that police was closing on the alleged suspects.
"We have provided protection to Mehta immediately after the threat call, Roy said adding that some more Bollywood personalities had received similar threats for overseas shows in the recent past.
Meanwhile, sources said one person, Gurjeet Singh, who works in editing films, was arrested on Monday in connection with threats to Mehta. He is likely to be produced in court later in the day, they added.
The underworld had stopped threatening Bollywood personalities of dire consequences if they held shows at particular places and with specific personalities sources said.
