Court allows makers to release 'Guddu Rangeela'

Just two days before Subhash Kapoor's 'Guddu Rangeela' hits theatres, a Bhojpuri singer moved the Bombay High Court to stay the release of the film whose title bears his name. However, the court has allowed the makers to go ahead with the release while issuing show-cause notices to them.

A source says, "The case came up for hearing today and the court has simply issued notices to the film's producers and director while reserving the next hearing date to July 20. The court might just ask them to pay some compensation to singer Guddu Rangila for using his name without consent."

Rangila had also named the Censor Board in the case for certifying the "defamatory" film based on two orchestra singers Guddu and Rangeela (Arshad Warsi and Amit Sadh) who carry out a kidnapping. Advocate DH Sharma, who represents the singer, says: "They have used my client's name in the film which can hamper his image. It is the Censor Board's duty to verify a film does not have any defamatory element as per section 5B of the Cinematograph Act, 1952."

The film's director, Subhash Kapoor feigned ignorance about the case, saying: "I am not aware of any such thing."
