The multi-starrer, where Kareena is paired opposite Punjabi heartthrob Diljit Dosanjh, looks closely at the drug problems in the state's youth.
Kareena, 34, will be playing a doctor in the movie, also starring Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt.
"It is very gritty, very real and the whole space is very dark. It is very exciting. I have done this kind of movies and getting back to that atmosphere is great.
'Udta's world is totally different," Kareena told PTI.
In her other upcoming film, R Balki's "Ki and Ka", the actress will romance her longtime friend Arjun Kapoor and she said she is having a great time shooting with the "2 States" star, who is a self-confessed fan of Kareena.
"He is one of my dearest friends. We have known each other for many years now. He just pulls my leg all the time on the sets and troubles me. The whole shoot is going very great and that is because our chemistry is so great," said the actress, whose recent film "Bajrangi Bhaijaan" has entered the Rs 300 crore club.
In both her upcoming films - "Udta Punjab" and "Ki and Ka", Kareena will be seen in de-glamourised avatars as she said her roles are real and any woman of today will be able relate to them.
"My 'Ki and Ka' character is very real. She is a girl of today, a working woman, who is married. She is very normal and she dresses very normal. Same goes with my role in 'Udta Punjab'. The whole idea is to make the characters connect to people," she said.
Kareena has no qualms about starring alongside younger stars- be it "Ki and Ka" with Arjun, Dosanjh in "Udta Punjab" and earlier "Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu" and "Gori Tere Pyaar Mein" opposite Imran Khan.
"I am glad to be able to get an opportunity to work with all the Khans, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn and now I am working with Arjun. I think directors cast me as they feel that I suit the part. Also, I believe that you are as old as you look," Kareena said.
