Sooraj Barjatya tried to make a younger film in Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon. He failed Karan Johar intends to move to a maturer level of storytelling in Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna.
Now it's Suneel Darshan who's all set to move away from his trademark pattern of movie making with a young hip Bobby Deol-Upen Patel starrer
But before that Cannes calls the masala movie maker. It looks like a full house in Cannes this year. It's not just Karan Johar who's heading to the most prestigious film festival in the world.
This week Suneel Darshan takes the entire oeuvre of his films to Cannes.
Speaking from London the producer-director said, "I've a stall in Cannes. I'm taking my entire repertoire there, from Inteqaam in 1988 which my production house had produced and Raj Kumar Santoshi had directed, to my first directorial venture Ajay to my recent Dosti....
Also included are my brother's Lootere and Haan Maine Bhi Pyar Kiya.. Rahul Nanda has designed a brochure representing my entire journey as a filmmaker."
Suneel Darshan thinks the time for Indian cinema to make a global impact is now. "Our cinema is creating an impact far beyond India. Our overseas collections are rising by the week. It's time we took our cinema more seriously."
Suneel will return from Cannes to make what he calls an unususual departure from his style in his next project.
"I've my actor's dates from 1 July. I'll start pre-production work in June. I want to do a photo-shoot with Bobby and Upen when I return from Cannes. But I need fresh faces to play the female leads. I want to package this film in a completely new style.
I'm trying to evolve with the times. Dosti ended one phase in my career. I'm now trying to enter a new phase. I want to play the game of making a younger cinema that everyone is making. In style my new film will be American.
But the values that I believe in as a filmmaker will remain. This film will just be more stylized. I want to bring on whole new crew and team this team. But the script is my own. Bobby will play a negative role for the first time."
Will Suneel Darshan's attempt to re-invent himelf work?
