Until a few weeks ago, Perizaad was excited about playing the role in the movie. But now she has decided, "to step back from the project because of my personal inhibitions about playing a lesbian and for no other reasons," she told a national daily.
"It would be unfair to the script, character as well as the director to have an actor play Kiran half-heartedly," she said.
US-based Manan Katohora, who is directing the movie, said he held no grudge against Parizaad for changing her mind.
"Although I would have loved to have her as part of the film, I respect and understand her decision," the daily quoted Katohora as saying.
"I guess, some past Bollywood films dealing with lesbianism like Girlfriend have scared many actors off," Katohora added.
Trade analyst Indu Mirani explained that two recent Bollywood movies on lesbianism, Girlfriend and Men Not Allowed, had dealt with the subject crudely, which made such films unappealing to actors.
