The crime-drama featuring Ilayathalapathy Vijay and Amy Jackson released last month and has shattered the box office record of SS Rajamouli's magnum opus 'Baahubali'.
If things go as per plan, this will be the third time that Akshay features in the remake of the South star's film - he was earlier seen in the 'Thuppaki' remake named 'Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty' and will reprise Vijay's role in the Hindi remake of AR Murugadoss' 'Kaththi'.
A source says, "Akshay is keen to remake 'Theri' under his production banner and has initiated talks with the makers for the rights. Interestingly, the film surpassed the opening week collections of Akshay's 'Airlift' in the overseas market, especially Australia, and is still doing brisk business. That probably caught the Khiladi's attention."
The actor remained unavailable for comment, but an industry insider confirms the news, saying, "Akshay's team is in touch with makers of 'Theri'. He found out about the film after it set new records at the box office. The script is interesting and Akshay knows he can fit the lead role with ease. Once the paperwork is finalised, a formal announcement shall be made."
