The trend of Hollywood reigning supreme at the ticket counters continued with last week's releases as 'The Conjuring 2' dominated moviegoers' plate of options. The horror drama scared the two Hindi films, 'TE3N' and 'Do Lafzon Ki Kahani', out of top spot at the box office in their opening weekend.
'The Conjuring 2' released on 900 screens across the country in four languages (English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu) and was lapped up by cinegoers looking for some edge-of-the-seat thrill. At the end of its first weekend, it minted Rs 19.85 crore and left behind the Bollywood releases, both of which are remakes of Korean films, by miles.
Amitabh Bachchan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer 'TE3N' made Rs 11.13 crore while 'Do Lafzon Ki Kahani', which released on almost half the screens, managed to do a business of just about Rs 3.74 crore. The latter's debacle is being seen as a major setback for Randeep Hooda, whose last few outings including 'Sarbjit' and 'Laal Rang' did not strike gold at the box office either.
Trade expert Amod Mehra, "It was another dull weekend at the box office. Once again, Hollywood beat Bollywood. 'The Conjuring 2' collected more than the two Hindi releases put together. 'TE3N' made decent collections but not as much as expected since it catered only to the niche audience. On the other hand, 'Do Lafzon Ki Kahani' was a complete wash-out."
After a sluggish day one, 'TE3N' witnessed an almost 50 per cent growth in business on Saturday, says trade guru Taran Adarsh. "It made Rs 4.69 crore overseas. But Conjuring 2 remained the first choice of the cinegoers," he adds.
The previous week's hit, 'Housefull 3' collected Rs 15.2 crore this weekend, to reach a total of Rs 95.30 crore. The comedy drama is expected to break into the Rs 100-crore league by tomorrow.
