"We were about to release the film on June 24, but we couldn't. There are numerous obstacles coming up, but despite all that, we will release the film on July 1... (We are) hoping to release the film in 700-750 screens," said the film's creative director Shashie Vermaa.
The film is said to be based on the Muzaffarnagar riots, and objections have been raised alleging that it features characters inspired by BJP legislator Sangeet Som, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and state cabinet minister Azam Khan.
The makers have denied that the film is based on the Muzaffarnagar riots and have received clearance from the censor board.
"Sangeet Som is an MLA and being an MLA, you are supposed to serve the society but if you spread false information that the film is made to damage your reputation, then that it is wrong," Vermaa added.
Producer Swatantra Vijay Singh said: "There are threat calls coming in that if we showcase the film, then riots will take place and other such threats. I want to ask him (Sangeet Som) till what level will he go to block it without watching the film?
"I challenge him that he watches the film and then if feels anywhere that we have made a film based on his character, then he is justified."
"Shorgul" stars Jimmy Sheirgill and Ashutosh Rana in key roles.
