One of the projects on the anvil is a sequel to his 1992 mega-hit Ghayal. But there's a hitch.
Sunny explains, "See, Ghayal was a very special film. There's no point in messing around with it until we're absolutely sure about the script. I don't want to do it for the heck of it. But yes the sequels are doing well. This is the right time for Ghayal 2"
Sunny sounded out the original director for the Ghayal sequel.. "I remember speaking to Raj Santoshi about a sequel many years ago when sequels like Rocky 2 were doing well.
But back then sequels weren't in vogue in our country, and we couldn't think of the right subject. Now with the corporate houses backing the Part 2s to the hilt everyone is into sequels."
Although Santoshi is the right choice for the sequel he seems reluctant to do it. Says Sunny, "There's a problem with Raj. He doesn't want to work with me. He keeps saying he wants to work with me again. But he never comes up with any concrete subject.
I can tell you at least ten occasions when we thought of working together, and he backed out. I guess it's just one of those filmy situations where Raj keeps saying, 'Let's work together sometime' without meaning it."
Sunny's next big release is around the corner. "Anil Sharma's Apne has all three of us—Dad (Dharmendra), Bobby and I. It's shaped up well. We wanted to do a family-bonding film. But not just for the heck of it. We wanted to go into a father-son relationship with reference to real life.
When I directed Dillagi I deliberately kept Dad out of it. He didn't have much to do there. It was difficult to find a subject that did justice to all three of us. Apne is a subject which all three of us liked."
