Bollywood stars Alia Bhatt and Hritik Roshan have been invited by the Oscars to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Alia Bhatt's last movie ''Gully Boy'' was selected as India's official entry for the best international feature category at the 2019 Oscars. However, the film did not get the Oscar nomination.

Among the 819 artists and executives who have been invited to the 93rd Academy Awards, Alia Bhatt and Hritik Roshan are the only Bollywood actors to receive an invitation from the academy. Other popular Indian artists to receive invitations are casting director Nandini Shrikent, documentary filmmakers Nishtha Jain and Amit Madheshiya, visual effects supervisors Vishal Anand and Sandeep Kamal.

93rd Academy Awards are scheduled to be held on April 25, 2021, and will have special voting rights for those who will accept the invitation. The Academy said that the new invitees include 36 percent of people of colour and 45 per cent women. The Academy is taking important steps to include diverse people in its voting to avoid a controversy like 2016 when the Oscars were dubbed "white" for failing to recognize talents of colour.

Star cast of Oscar-winning South Korean movie 'Parasite' has also been invited to join the Academy. Indian artists such as filmmakers Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap and veteran actor Anupam Kher were the members to get invited among the 842 new members in 2019 Academy Awards.
