Akshay Kumar starrer 'Sooryavanshi' and Ranveer Singh starrer '83' are high budget projects which can not go straight on OTT platforms irrespective of the fact that these films got affected by the coronavirus pandemic as the makers are not ready to compromise with the revenue generation capacity of these films.
Kabir Khan's 1983 Cricket World Cup based biographical sports-drama '83' which features an ensemble cast of Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Ammy Virk, Jiiva, Harrdy Sandhu, Boman Irani, Pankaj Tripathi, Sahil Khattar, and many others. The film, based on India's win of the 1983 Cricket World Cup in Kapil Dev's captaincy is the only way the majority of India is going to witness and live the epic match and celebrate the win once again.
Same goes for Rohit Shetty's 'Sooryavanshi' which marks the coming together of Akshay and Katrina's iconic on-screen pair after a gap of 10 years. The cherry on top is the cameos by Ajay Devgn and Ranveer Singh as 'Bajirao Singham' and 'Simmba' which is enough to get the fans to flock the theatres once they re-open and get in big moolah for the producers. These films each have the capacity to generate a minimum of 250 crores at the box office and maximum is records being broken. That is an amount no digital platform can afford to pay as the maximum we have seen is Akshay Kumar's Laxmmi Bomb getting 125 crores so the figure of even 200 crores seems unimaginable.
Shibashish Sarkar, the Group CEO of Reliance Entertainment, who is also the distributor of both films, has confirmed that these films will be released theatrically once things come back to normal. In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, he confirmed, `As per the situation right now, we foresee that even if the normalcy takes another 3-6 months of time, we are mentally clear that we want to give both the films a proper theatrical release.`
Later, in a webinar, Shibashish made a point that the Reliance team is ready to battle the lockdown conditions even if it goes till September. He also highlighted that the whole team of the entertainment industry has to join hands to come victorious later on. All these points and statements indicate that these big-screen films will surely not be released on OTT platforms. The main question is when these films will finally go on screens or is there a chance that the makers will release it digitally!
