It was Manmohan Desai's Naseeb in 1981 to get there first. For a party scene, Amitabh Bachchan played a waiter calling himself John Jani Janardhan (which in 1984, was borrowed as a title of a Rajnikant starrer!), he managed to get so many real-life stars to attend as 'guests' that the onscreen party looked like the Milky Way itself.
Now Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om has been just completed with the title song that packs in the Who's Who, as many as 29 of them, of Bollywood.
The song was shot at Film City, Mumbai, for over seven days. The situation: superstar Om Kapoor, played by Shah Rukh Khan, has won an award and throws a party which is attended by all the stars.
Farah and Shah Rukh personally invited all the big guns of Bollywood and managed to shoot the song with a 29-gun salute!. Interestingly, Om Shanti Om is based on the film industry itself and spans over two eras.
For the very first time, cinegoers will get to see Saif Ali Khan, Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt together onscreen. Dharmendra, supoerstar of an earlier era, arrived after these three finished their shoot. But when they saw Dharam shoot, all three of them jumped into the frame and started a jig with Dharam.
Jumping Jack Jeetendra, as he was known then, shook a leg with his son Tusshar Kapoor for the title song. Mithun Chakraborty, specially flew down to Mumbai from Hyderabad to oblige Farah Khan and shoot for this song. This song will probably mark the comeback of Karisma Kapoor to the big screen.
Karisma took to the floor after Tabu and Urmila had done their act. Suniel Shetty, who played the villain in Farah's last (and first film, as director), Main Hoon Naa, was slightly apprehensive as he is also a 'villain' as far as two left feet are concerned. Moreover, he was to break into gyration after, guess who, Govinda! Doubly tough.
The jiggers' party went on with Dharan's younger son, Bobby, Zayed Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Dino Morea, Ritiesh Deshmukh and Aftab Shivdasani. The female brigade was showcased by Rekha, Shabana Azmi, Juhi Chawla, Rani Mukerji, Kajol, Preity Zinta, Priyanka Chopra, Shilpa Shetty, Lara Dutta, Vidya Balan, Malaika Arora and Amrita Arora. Enough to set the floor on fire.
In another unique turn, it was the stars who did the thank-you act, because Farah and Shah Rukh honoured them by gifting them for their effort and gesture. The gifts included Tag Heuer watch, Nokia phone, gold coin with Om inscribed on it and a personalised T-shirt with OSO – You Made It Big printed on it.
So if thought Farah had only buddy SRK to project as the film's USP again, wait till you see Om Shanti Om. With so many big Bollywood stars coming together for a single song, Om Shanti Om will add to the star power of Shah Rukh Khan. -
