It was the year 2004 when Karan Johar took over his late producer-father Dharma Productions house and produced and directed several Bollywood films which turned out a big success at the box-office. Karan Johar recently paid tribute to his father and remembered him for his teachings and tremendous karma. Yash Johar founded Dharma Productions in 1976 and made Hindi films that were noted for featuring lavish sets and exotic locations, but upheld Indian traditions and family values.

Karan Johar shared a throwback picture with late father Yash Johar on Instagram and penned an emotional note for producer-father as Dharma Productions completes 40 years in the film industry. He wrote, "40 years ago on this date you released your first film DOSTANA and thus began a company that was so close to your heart....all your tremendous karma is in every sunshine ray of @dharmamovies ....all we have done is bask in the glory of your goodwill.... we stand tall because of your teachings and pray everyday that you are proud of all of us Papa! Dharma is a result of so many of us who strive everyday to spread cheer at the movies...we miss you ...but we feel your hand on our head and that gives us the courage to combat and to create ....I love you so much Papa...❤️." Yash Johar began his career in Bollywood in 1962 in Sunil Dutt's production house Ajanta Arts. He was associated with films like 'Mujhe Jeene Do' and 'Yeh Raaste Hai Pyaar Ke'. He helped filmmaker Dev Anand handle the production of his film 'Guide', which did roaring business at the box office.

In 1976, Johar launched his own banner, Dharma Productions and produced Raj Khosla's 'Dostana'. The last film Johar was involved in the production of was 'Kal Ho Naa Ho'. Yash Johar died on June 26th, 2004 in Mumbai, aged 74, of a chest infection, though he had also been fighting cancer. After his death, his son Karan took over the reins of Dharma Productions.
