In February 2019, it was reported that filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is planning a remake of 'Baiju Bawra' film (1952). Now, the rumors are floating around the corners of tinsel town that Sanjay is all set to cast Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt in the female lead roles. The filmmaker has also locked Ranbir Kapoor for Baiju's role in the film. In the original film, Bharat Bhushan played the role of Baiju, and Meena Kumari portrayed his love interest Gauri. On the other side, Kuldip Kaur played the role of the dacoit queen Roopmati.

According to the sources, `It's a story of four characters - two heroes and two heroines. For both the heroines, SLB has decided to go with his current favorites Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt. He has narrated the script to both of them and they have both loved their parts.`

`In all probabilities, Alia will be paired opposite Ranbir's Baiju in the film, stepping into Meena Kumari's shoes from the original. Deepika will play the other female lead, that of dacoit Roopmati essayed by Kuldip Kaur in the 1952 drama. Both the actors will be Ranbir's romantic interests in the period saga and have shown a keen interest in the project. If this materializes, this will be a big casting coup for sure`, continued the source.

The source further adds, "The movie revolves around the characters of Baiju and Tansen and the conflict between the two. For Baiju's character, Ranbir has almost been finalized. The paperwork is yet to be done but SLB has already discussed the film with the actor and he's liked the script. For Tansen's role, they need a much older actor and they are already in talks with two big superstars to come on board."

The original 'Baiju Bawra' merges the legend of Baiju Bawra with the historic setting of Mughal Emperor Akbar's court in India. Baiju was the son of a musician who also grew up to be a musician. He comes to believe that Tansen, the famed musician at the court of Akbar, is responsible for his father's death. The movie then follows Baiju's attempt to avenge his father's death by challenging Tansen to a musical duel.

Earlier also a remake of the film tentatively titled Baiju-The Gypsy was announced in November 2010. As per the details, it was to be written, directed and produced by American-Indian writer Krishna Shah and big names like Aamir Khan and A. R. Rahman were to come together in this film but eventually, the film was shelved. Well, if rumors are true then we'll soon get a period saga featuring Alia, Ranbir, and Deepika all together for the first time.
