Bollywood has always been enjoying a massive audience following and it would not be wrong to say that Indian people are obsessed with the fancy world of Bollywood. And guess what, Netflix has come up with a show called 'Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives' that surely gonna entertain you if you're a Bollywood lover! The reality series stars four real-life BFFs Neelam Kothari, Maheep Kapoor, Bhavna Pandey and Seema Khan, wives of Bollywood actors Samir Soni, Sanjay Kapoor, Chunky Pandey and Sohail Khan respectively. The show takes us through the personal and professional lives of these Bollywood wives who are a delight to watch on the screen.
The first episode introduces us to the profession of these ladies. Neelam is a 1980s star who appeared in some popular Hindi films with Govinda, now runs a jewellery design store and is married to the actor Samir Soni. Bhavna, the wife of actor Chunkey Pandey and mother of young talent Ananya Panday, has a pret label. Maheep Kapoor, a one-time model-actor wedded to actor Sanjay Kapoor, also has a bauble business. Seema Khan, the spouse of director and actor Sohail Khan, owns a clothing boutique. These women have known each other for decades and show us their mutual affection and oh so glamourous lives with their faked candidness.
The series opens with the Kapoor clan travelling to Paris to attend Bal des debutantes, where they present Shanaya Kapoor as a debutante to the world (and Bollywood), for an inevitable career in the industry. Meanwhile, we see these women sharing behind the camera thoughts on each other which is fun to watch. We then see Neelam Kothari struggling with the thought of coming back to the big screen as the actress left acting 20 years ago. The show at no points disappoints us with the fancy life of these stars as each dialogue and scene is filled with that. Then it's Karan Johar popping in and out to give the touch of some drama as he caused the first fake fight between Bhavna and Seema in the show.
The episodes were going interesting until Maheep Kapoor decided to to go to Doha for a holiday with her BFFs. In Doha, they draw up a list of the `hottest men` in showbiz. A man purportedly stalks Neelam, both flattering and frightening her. The bond these wives share seems pretty comfortable and completely at ease being filmed. They discuss career, motherhood, husbands and friendship on the screen and pretend to bicker, compare notes on skincare and their children. What this show truly holds is the glamourous lives of these women and how they manage their home, children, career etc.
In between, we also see famous family members and members of the wider social circle coming in for cameos. There is Janhvi Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor, Chunky Panday, Ananya Panday, Shanay Kapoor and a lot more. We also Arjun Kapoor offering Maheep Kapoor's son Jahaan to ba an aspiring actor and a lesson on handling nepotism-obsessed trolls. You have set yourself up for public consumption, Arjun Kapoor says. Stop taking yourself so seriously and go with the flow. The best part comes in when the superstar Shah Rukh Khan plays the cameo with his better half, Gauri Khan. At a party thrown by Gauri Khan, Shah Rukh Khan walks in and tosses around a few typically warm and effusive anecdotes and the series stops in thrall.
Talking about the storyline, it's bland as oatmeal. The series failed to serve us with some salt and pepper as it has zero ingenuity, no drama, scripted performances, and the wannabe attempts at being cool, millennial moms which don't look cool. And while the concept takes us inside the lives and homes of these Bollywood couples, there is nothing that catches your attention. The series failed at acing the one and probably the only golden rule of a good reality show, which is to sell yourself. In a Nutshell, the series could be a nice one for all the Bollywood lovers out there but it doesn't count as the must-watch.
