After watching the trailer or poster of any movie, we can easily guess if it's a horror or not. These days as per the interest of audiences, more and more horror films are produced, and the one 'Durgamati: The Myth' was a highly anticipated flick, especially for Bhumi Pednekar's fans to see her in a totally different avatar. It's a remake of the Telugu film Bhaagamathie that's also helmed by the same director G. Ashok. It's a story that can take you to the world where you also get confused if it's a myth or reality.

The story begins with a very disturbing scene of a village where people get attacked but who does this, its a huge question. The first thing that can come to your mind, if it's any supernatural power or what? But before you get deep into it. The scene cut to Ishwar Prasad (Arshad Warsi), who is the politician and in the press conference, he's assuring the media to solve the issue of stolen antique statues from the ancient temples. And to prove his humanity, he promised them to quit his political career if he fails to track those people behind it.


The craze of this Minister is spreading over the city rapidly that disturbs the ruling party. So, to find something against Ishwar Prasad, CBI Joint Director Satakshi Ganguly (Mahie Gill) is called in, whose main motive is to prove him guilty in any case. To start her investigation, she steps towards the former personal secretary of Ishwar, IAS Chanchal Chauhan (Bhumi Pednekar), who is in the prison for shooting her husband, Shakti (Karan Kapadia) dead. For an illegal inquiry, Ganguly takes her to an abandoned haveli.

Before moving forward with the story, lemme tell you who this 'Durgamati' is. It's a spirit of a queen of that traditional mansion, who comes back to take revenge from her enemies. This part of the film can develop your curiosity to know what will happen now. How Chanchal will become Durgamati and what will happen next? And what that village story is which was shown in the first scene? To find all these questions, you should watch the movie, if you're a fan of thrill.


Its total time duration is 2 hours & 35 minutes, and director, G. Ashok tried to describe every part of the film to generate curiosity, where he succeeds but at a few points you might think that what just happened now and to understand it you have to rewind, like in the scene when Chanchal first time feel Durgamati's spirit and ran through the gateway of Haveli while shouting, and in the next scene she's in the same room but later you get to know that she's telling her side to the constables. So, some scenes could have been more clearer to understand. Moreover, those who want to feel some horror scenes, will not find it in the first hour and that's the time that seems quite stretched. Otherwise, the overall work being a director, Ashok has done well.


Concerning the performances of actors, Bhumi has proved that she can be fit in any kind of role. Her expressions, and the way of speaking in every emotion either to show wrath or sorrow, she has stood up for all. She seems very energetic in the role of Durgamati, exactly what the character is. Apart from her, Arshad Warsi in the character of the politician has a strong influential role. The acting of Mahie Gill is fine but the accent fails to show Bengali dialect which seems quite quirky. Karan Kapadia's screen time is not much but he also manages to justify his character that is full of anger.

In fact, at a few moments, you might feel as if it's a comedy horror? As some characters in supporting roles have some laughing scenes also. But the dialogues could have been good at some points, especially when you want to make your audience laugh.

Talking about the editing part, there are some points where you get twists and turns in the story that can make you feel 'Oh my gosh!'. But still, at a few moments, it could have been better to clearer the things. The screenplay is fine and somehow manages to bring what the director wants to deliver you. Besides this, there's only one song in the movie which is just like okay. Otherwise, background music is much to bring the fear factor in your show.

In the end, you might get surprised to know what actually the truth behind Durgamati, if it's true or just a myth. And to find it, you have to watch the movie. But don't expect many horror scenes in it,  otherwise, you may get disappointed. Its thrill overcomes some flaws in horror and makes it a good package for your weekend.
