Speaking in his characteristic baritone at the high-domed historic Town Hall here, Bachchan told a large gathering of journalists from across the globe on the first day of the four-day International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend that it was satisfying to see the global spread and recognition that Indian cinema has achieved.
"We have been through several years of criticism," he said. "We were looked down upon. To see it today, to see the appreciation of progress Indian cinema has made is particularly satisfying."
"The rest of the world has acknowledged our presence. I have played a very small part in this. Over the years, we have seen Indian cinema become part of the local culture in various parts of the world.
"In Britain, it is a magnificent bridge between our two cultures. The people here share our dreams, beliefs and come on a common platform. I have always admired the craft of cinema as it is close to human feelings".
Bachchan noted that Indian cinema has reached a stage when different countries and regions outside India were inviting film producers to not only shoot in their country but also wanting to contribute to its cause.
"The desire is not only to contribute to our cause but to be a valuable part to bring this force forward," Bachchan said indicating to the key contribution made by several local government agencies in Yorkshire to bring the IIFA Weekend to the region.
Bachchan said this year's IIFA event was particularly important because of its involvement with the cause of global warming and climate change. He recalled that according to experts, India would be one of the worst affected by the depredations of climate change.
"I will do everything possible through my voice, my face, to raise awareness about the dangers of climate change", he said.
Bachchan also said he was touched with the warmth and affection shown by the people of Yorkshire and added that it has been an emotional trip for him when the people welcomed him into their homes and hearts.
"A special thanks to the people of Yorkshire for this unbelievable hospitality", he said.
Making an impromptu intervention, actress Shilpa Shetty said she had decided to wear a green top to support the cause of global warming. Shetty also thanked the people of Yorkshire for their support to the Indian film fraternity and said she felt at home here.
