We met him recently and had a tête-à-tête about his new film 'Naqaab' and other aspects of his life. Here is the excerpt.
Q: What kind of a film is 'Naqaab'?
A: The story has been taken from our normal lives. We meet a lot of individuals in our life, but we can't say what they really are. This film deals these issues only. In real life also people wear 'Naqaab' (veil). We should try and find out the real person behind the mask.
In this film I play a rich man, like I play in all my films, but in this film I am cultured and have a lot of values. Special attention has been given to my clothes and styling. My makeover has been done by Aalim in this film.
Q: What is your take on 'Abbas Mastan'?
A: They are my favourite directors. According to me, they are specialists of thriller films. I have done ‘Soldier', ‘Ajnabee' and ‘Humraaz' with Abbas Mastan. The development they have done in the making of thriller films calls for appreciation.
Q: Akshaye Khanna says there is no person better than you.
A: I also have same thoughts about him. The fact is, Akshaye himself is such a good person that he feels that all people around him are good. Akshaye is like my brother. To tell the truth, I feel that we both are alike and that's why we gel so nicely.
Q: How is debutant Urvasi Sharma as an actress?
A: Urvasi is such a girl, who despite being new, has acted very well in the movie. Everybody wants to join the film industry from advertising, but they don't want to put in the hard work that is required.
Urvasi is different from all of them as she is very hardworking. She looks like an English lady and if she doesn't speak then she will look totally British.
Q: You were appreciated for your acting in ‘Jhoom Barabar Jhoom".
A: For the first time I got a chance to play two characters in a film. I am happy with that. The audiences have accepted me in serious as well as comic role.
Q: You have been accepted in negative roles as well. What do you want to say on that?
A: Every actor wants to play different characters in his films. My favourite actor is Robert deNiro who has played villain as well as the hero and is widely accepted and loved, but the problem with the audiences here was that they didn't want their hero to change.
But I am happy that audiences accept these types of roles now and also these types of stories are being written these days.
Q: Don't you think that there is openness in relations now?
A: It's true and that is why films are being made on this subject. ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehana' is a recent example of this. It happens everywhere but remains hidden. It is good that the youngsters are accepting this.
Q: Tell us something about your forthcoming films like ‘Apne' and ‘Nanhe Jaisalmer'.
A: ‘Apne' is a very special film for me. My father in this film plays a boxer who had to leave the profession due to some circumstances. His dream is to make his sons boxers, but his dream is not fulfilled.
I play a handicapped person with one hand in this film, but my brother and dad never let me feel this. While I am playing Bobby Deol in ‘Nanhe Jaisalmer' this film is specially made for the children.
Q: We have heard that you cried a lot during the shooting of ‘Apne'...
A: I am very close to my dad and for him I am just a kid today also. This film is close to my heart and it is a big achievement for me to work with my dad in this film.
He is such a man who gives preference to his family before his career. He has always helped his relatives. When he was giving his speech at the IIFA then also I got emotional. For me my dad means a lot.
Q: After ‘Dilllagi' much improvement has come in your acting says Sunny Deol...
A: As for now, Bhaiya has not said anything to me regarding this. I feel if there would have been no improvement then he would have told me.
As far as the issue of improvement is concerned, I would like to say that it comes with each film and experience. I want to ask you that there must have been much improvement in you since the time you took your first interview.
Q: Today we are accepting Hollywood culture totally. What do you want to say on that?
A: Where the question of culture comes, personally I don't accept that trend. Today, seeing them we are celebrating Fathers' Day and Mothers' Day. Is it right?
Aree Bhai, they have one day for their parents but for us all 365 days are for our parents. But in films I accept that we should take tips from them. The first film was made in Hollywood and by this measure they are our forerunners.
There is nothing wrong taking their concept and molding them to Indian conditions and making a film.
Q: You are full of values. Whom do you want to give the credit for that?
A: I will give the credit for this to my Dadi. She has put in values and culture in my dad and my mom is also like this too. And it is also said that we become what our parents are.
Q: Tell us something about your other forthcoming films.
A: My forthcoming films include Sangeeth Sivan's ‘Ek tha Roshan'. This is an emotional film and is a remake of a south Indian film. ‘Sivaji' fame Shreya is in this film with me. This film is like ‘Nanhe Jaisalmer' and I can't talk or divulge more information than this to you. -Rajnee Gupta
