Veteran actor and politician Mithun Chakraborty will be honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, as announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The award will be presented during the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on October 8, 2024.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Vaishnaw lauded Chakraborty's contribution to Indian cinema, describing his cinematic journey as an inspiration for generations. He wrote, "Mithun Da's remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema."

Mithun Chakraborty made his Bollywood debut with the Mrinal Sen-directorial 'Mrigayaa' in 1976, a role that earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor. The award is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals.

Mithun Chakraborty will be the 54th recipient of this award. Previous honorees include legendary figures like Prithviraj Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Raj Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, BR Chopra, Yash Chopra, and Waheeda Rehman (who received the award in 2021).
