Dhanush's production house, Wunderbar Movies, claims that three seconds of behind-the-scenes footage from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan appeared in the documentary's trailer. The film, produced by Wunderbar Movies, starred Nayanthara in a lead role and was directed by Vignesh Shivan. Dhanush asserts that the use of this footage violated copyright laws as no prior consent was obtained.
Following the documentary's release, Dhanush demanded damages amounting to ₹10 crore and sought legal recourse through the Madras High Court.
The civil suit was presented before Justice Abdul Quddhose, who instructed Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan to respond to the allegations. Wunderbar Movies also sought the court's permission to include Netflix's parent company, Los Gatos Production Services India LLP, in the lawsuit, arguing that a significant part of the cause of action fell within the court's jurisdiction.
Senior advocate P.S. Raman, representing Wunderbar Movies, emphasized the need for Netflix's involvement in the case. Justice Quddhose approved the request to implead Los Gatos and adjourned the matter for further proceedings.
Advocates Sathish Parasaran and R. Parthasarathy appeared on behalf of Nayanthara and Netflix, respectively, during the hearing.
This legal dispute has garnered significant attention, especially given the high-profile individuals involved. As the case progresses, the industry is closely watching whether a resolution will be reached or if it will set a precedent for copyright issues in the South Indian film industry.
With the Madras High Court now overseeing the case, further developments are awaited to clarify the extent of liability and potential ramifications for all parties involved.
