From Gujarati Stardom to Bollywood: Janki’s Journey
Janki Bodiwala was already a celebrated name in Gujarati cinema when she took on the lead role of Aarya in Vash, a supernatural thriller directed by Krishnadev Yagnik. The film’s powerful storyline and gripping sequences made it a critical and commercial success in 2023. Her performance in Vash was so compelling that she was cast in its Hindi remake, Shaitaan, where she played Janhvi, the daughter of characters portrayed by Ajay Devgn and Jyotika.
Released on March 8, 2024, Shaitaan garnered positive reviews from critics, with particular praise for its gripping plot and strong performances — including Janki’s emotionally charged portrayal of a girl trapped by black magic.
A Bold Ask: The Pee Scene That Never Was
In a recent interview with Filmfare, Janki Bodiwala shared one of the most unforgettable moments during her Vash workshops — when director Krishnadev Yagnik asked her if she could actually urinate on camera for a pivotal scene.
“I did the Gujarati version, and I had the same scene to perform there. While we were doing workshops, the director, he’s a very good person. He asked me, ‘Can you just do it for real? The pee scene. It will make a big impact,’” she recalled.
While the request might seem extreme, it highlights the level of dedication to realism that both the director and Janki aimed for. She admitted to being excited by the challenge and the unique opportunity as an actor.
“I was so happy about it. Like, whoa! Being an actor, I’m getting a chance to do it on screen — something that no one has ever done,” she added.
Artistic Vision vs Practical Reality
Although the idea was daring and rooted in realism, the scene ultimately wasn't filmed that way. Janki explained that artistic limitations and logistical concerns made it impractical to actually perform the act on set.
“It would not have been possible practically on set,” she admitted. “So we found a way of doing that. I was happy I get to do things I can’t in real life.”
Despite the final decision to simulate the moment rather than shoot it as originally envisioned, the scene remained one of Janki’s favorites in the film. It became a defining factor in her decision to accept the role.
“That scene is literally my favourite scene. And because of that scene, I said yes to that film,” she concluded.
The Power of Performance: From Possession to Praise
In both Vash and Shaitaan, Janki’s character becomes the target of black magic, falling under a sinister spell cast by a stranger. Her transformation on screen is chilling, and the emotional weight she brings to the role stands out as one of the film’s highlights.
In Shaitaan, the narrative follows her character’s parents, played by Ajay Devgn and Jyotika, as they desperately try to rescue their daughter from the supernatural grip. The movie's tense atmosphere, sharp editing, and intense performances contributed to its warm reception from audiences and critics alike.
A Rising Star with Grit and Talent
Janki Bodiwala’s experience behind the scenes in Vash showcases her fearless approach to acting and her commitment to pushing creative boundaries. At a time when actors are often cautious about on-screen risks, her openness to unconventional methods speaks volumes about her passion for the craft.
Her Hindi debut has already catapulted her into national spotlight, and her ability to handle complex characters with nuance and authenticity positions her as a promising talent in Indian cinema.
Final Thoughts
Janki Bodiwala’s story is more than just an anecdote about a controversial scene — it’s a reflection of the unseen challenges actors face, the dedication to realism, and the choices that shape powerful performances. As she continues to transition into Bollywood, audiences can expect more bold roles and transformative performances from this rising star.
With Vash and Shaitaan already behind her, and a growing fanbase across India, Janki Bodiwala is undoubtedly a name to watch in the coming years.
