Why the Court Issued Summons
The summons came after advocate Wajed Rahim Khan filed a petition, claiming that certain portions of the film mock court proceedings and portray the legal profession in a derogatory manner.
Khan particularly objected to a scene in which judges are allegedly referred to as “mama”, a slang term, which he argued amounts to disrespecting the judiciary. Speaking to ANI, he said: “There should be respect for the lawyers. That is why I filed a petition in the court. Whatever they have shown about the advocates and the judges is wrong. The court has asked Akshay Kumar, Arshad Warsi, and the director to be present.”
Background of the Complaint
The complaint was originally filed in 2024, shortly after the film’s first teaser was released. The teaser hinted at the legal banter between the two Jollys—played by Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi—which sparked controversy within sections of the legal community.
About the Jolly LLB Franchise
The Jolly LLB series is one of Bollywood’s most successful courtroom comedy-dramas:
Jolly LLB (2013): Starring Arshad Warsi, the film was a sleeper hit, grossing close to ₹50 crore on a modest budget of ₹10 crore.
Jolly LLB 2 (2017): With Akshay Kumar in the lead, the sequel turned into a superhit, raking in over ₹200 crore worldwide.
Jolly LLB 3 (2025): For the first time, both Akshay and Arshad will share the screen, reprising their roles as rival lawyers. The film is written and directed by Subhash Kapoor and produced by Alok Jain and Ajit Andhare under Star Studio 18.
Jolly LLB 3 Release Date
Despite the legal hurdle, Jolly LLB 3 is scheduled to hit theatres on September 19, 2025. The film has generated massive buzz as fans eagerly await the courtroom showdown between Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi.
Impact of the Summons on the Film
While legal notices to filmmakers over content are not uncommon in Bollywood, the timing—so close to the release—could pose challenges. The filmmakers may either have to justify the scenes in court or make modifications if the court deems them offensive.
For now, all eyes are on the October 28 hearing, which will determine whether the film faces delays or proceeds as planned.
Jolly LLB 3, one of the most anticipated films of 2025, faces legal trouble even before release, with accusations of disrespecting the judiciary. However, the film continues to build excitement among fans eager to see Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi face off in the courtroom.
