There has been a lot of talk, positive and otherwise, on the presence of 5 Pakistani singers on Zee's music contest Sa Re Ga Ma Pa.
While a majority of viewers and entertainment heads in Mumbai feel talent from across the border deserves a platform a cluster of disgruntled elements counter-argue that Indian singers, and that includes Lata Mangeshkar who's worshipped equally on both sides of the border, are yet to be allowed into the neighbouring country.
Luckily the Pakistanis on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa are happy doing what they like the most, regardless of borders.
Amanat Ali speaks on behalf of the other Pakistani contestants.
So far how has the experience of staying and singing in Mumbai been?
These four months in India have been so good to me that the experience will stay with me for the rest of my life.
The 'gurujans' (judges) are people who everybody is dying to meet and I have had the privilege of singing in front of them. I have sung more than 40 songs in their presence. I had never thought or even dreamt that we will be able to meet them.
I have improved tremendously as far as playback singing is concerned. The memories are unparalleled. People of Hindustan have given us so much love.
I LOVE Mumbai – Gateway of India, Juhu Breach, the vada pav, pani puri, everything about the city is awesome!
Would you say Zee has given the platform and opportunity that are generally lacking in your own country?
That's not true, entirely at least. I am the lead singer of the Mikka Hasan band back in Pakistan. But if you ask me personally, I have always wanted to perform in India.
Well, actually, to tell you the truth, there are more platforms in India though there are an equal number of opportunities in Pakistan as well.
Why did you refuse to sing Indian patriotic songs for Independence Day?
That was a rumor floated by someone. None of it is true. In fact, very few people are aware that it is us (Pakistani singers) who suggested the theme and the idea was that we sing Indian patriotic songs.
I really feel it's not worth getting into again. We have had such a wonderful time here that I don't want to take back unpleasant memories.
The love I have received from people here is enough to drown such petty instance.
Do you have plans to pursue a career in singing in India...who are your favourite singers and composers?
Definitely! I would love to. Singing is my life. I will die without music. Sonu Nigam is my favourite singer. All our mentors on the show and Shankar- Ehsaan -Loy are my favourite composers.
