"I Was Asked to Leave the Church for Questioning Too Much": Terence Lewis on Faith, Doubt and Challenging Religion!
Recently, choreographer Terence Lewis shared a deeply personal account of growing up in a religious household and the difficult journey of questioning belief systems at a young age on I.I.M.U.N.’s Before I Became Me, hosted by Rishabh Shah.

Raised in a deeply faith-driven environment, his early curiosity led him to start reading the Bible extensively. “By the age of eight and nine he first read the bible and then re-read it at the age of 12… that’s when I started asking questions… there were a lot of discrepancies and the priests also couldn’t answer. At one point he said, get out, leave. You are asking too many questions.”

Terence also reflected on how this questioning affected his family, especially his mother. “When I started to question religion, that was the hardest thing for my mother… I know I put her through a lot of grief.” Drawing a distinction between faith and organised systems, he added, “The Christian faith, not Jesus Christ… but the system, the church… why should I need to listen to this person’s version of the Bible, and why can’t I make my own decision?”

The conversation highlights a rarely spoken about conflict between inherited faith and personal inquiry—bringing to the surface questions many experience but few openly discuss.
