At 26, Mohit Suri has carved a niche for himself in the crowded Bollywood market with hit films like Kalyug, Zaher, Woh Lamhe and the critically acclaimed Awaarapan.
Getting ready with the pre-production work of his next, Suri took out time to speak to TWF correspondent Ruhail Amin.
Your film Awaarapan did not manage to get the popularity that you expected. Does that fact still bother you?
To be honest, it did bother me initially. I mean its human nature to feel bad about not getting what you expect. Moreover the fact that it was a good film further aggravated the situation. But, now I have moved ahead and realized that apart from making a good film it's equally important to plot the right release time as well.
So, what keeps you busy these days?
Well, I'm getting ready with the script of my next film Raaz 2 and I plan to start the shoot soon. Moreover there are couple of other fresh ideas that I'm also working on at the moment.
Will Raaz 2 have the same star cast as its prequel and what about the theme, would you continue from where it ended earlier?
I won't call it a sequel in real terms because the theme we are touching in this film is going to be different. Though I'm also dealing with a supernatural subject, but its far different from what Raaz was all about. My film will take a closer look at the reality behind the superstitions prevalent in the country.
Even the star cast won't be the same. I have narrowed on Emraan Hashmi so far, who will be playing the lead role. The other cast is still being finalized.
All of your films have been with Vishesh Films only. Aren't you keen to work with other banners as well?
My association with Vishesh Films is purely because they respect my creativity and I enjoy total control over my films, which is actually something all filmmakers crave for and hardly get. So, I am fortunate in that way.
Moreover, the banner has some of the best creative brains behind it like Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt and working with them is a great learning experience. But, that doesn't mean I won't like to work with other banners. In fact I would love to do so provided I enjoy the same creative freedom that Vishesh Films has given me.
It was reported that Tips has signed a film deal with you. Could you tell us more on that?
No, I am not doing any film with Tips. At the moment my only focus is my next film with Vishesh Films.
Coming back to your films, you have touched genres like romance and action, but what about comedy that seems to be a favourite theme with audiences. Aren't you keen on doing comedy too?
Well, the fact is that my film after Raaz 2 is going to be a comedy. I understand that for a filmmaker it's important to try different genres and if you look at my films all of them have touched a different themes. With Raaz 2 I will be making my first thriller and the film after that would be a laughter riot.
What are the biggest challenges you face as a filmmaker?
I guess the biggest challenge as a filmmaker is to come out with a film that the audience really enjoys and appreciates. So far I have managed to keep the audience interested and my biggest worry will be my bad film. I hope it never happens, but as a filmmaker I know it's inevitable.
And tell us about your personal life? Is marriage on your mind?
I can't think of marriage at this moment since I have to repay the bank loan which I took to buy my new flat. Even my girlfriend Udita (Udita Goswami) is busy with her career. I guess it's a matter of few more years before I tie the knot.
