What should have been a memorable birthday turned out to be an unmitigated disaster for Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt on Monday. The ‘spoiler' of the birthday party was the Mumbai Police, which released a taped conversation between underworld don Chhota Shakeel and Sanju baba, directors Mahesh Manjrekar and Sanjay Gupta. Also involved in the talk was producer Harish Sugandh.

The bolt from the blue came, ironically, as Sanjay, Manjrekar and Sanjay Gupta were planning to have a birthday bash for Dutt prior to the release of ‘Kaante". Interestingly, director Manjrekar is acting in the movie, which has been directed by Sanjay Gupta. The conversation, taped in 2000, reportedly took place in a hotel at Nasik where Sanjay had gone along with a friend.

The tape has been submitted by the police as evidence in the Bharat Shah case. Film star Govinda and Hrithik Roshan, who faced a threat to his life, figure prominently in the conversation.The conversation has ‘Rocky' Dutt referring to Hrithik as ‘Chikna', who he says, called up Karisma and abused her. In his reply, Shakeel says he won't be around for too long! Incidentally, Hrithik's father, Rakesh Roshan was shot at and injured because he refused to share the profits of "Kaho Na Pyar Hai" The conversation, peppered with expletives and laughter, veers round to Govinda. Sanjay refers to Govinda's perpetual late-coming to which the underworld don says that he would look into the matter. In any case, in his film, Chi Chi would turn up on time, assures Shakeel.

Director Mahesh Manjrekar tells Shakeel that he wants to make a film on the don. His ego tickled, Shakeel promises all the necessary inputs. Manjrekar incidentally directed the immensely popular Sanjay-starrer "vaastav", the story of which revolved around the dreaded underworld.
