But Baba is finally turning to direction, something that his sister has been urging him to do for years. And Shabana's husband Javed Akhtar's son Farhan will be producing Baba's directorial debut.
Baba is ready with a script that is apparently about an idealistic young man journey into self-realization.
Though the reticent Baba choses not to comment about the big happening in the Azmi family sister Shabana can barely contain her excitement.
"I'm thrilled that Baba is taking the plunge. But I'm also unhappy because neither me nor my sister-in-law Tanvi have a part in Baba's directorial debut. Never mind. Baba just directed me in two ads and it was wonderful."
Assessing Baba as a director Shabana says, "He just directed me for two ads. One for spectacle lenses and another for an energy saver. He's made me look so beautiful. He's truly an actors' director. He's so calm on the sets."
What really won the proud sister over was the rare care Baba took looking after Shabana on the sets while directing the ads.
Says Shabana emotionally, "My makeup room had mogra flowers in a cane basket. It also had the six newspapers that I read and the face napkins that I like.
I couldn't help thinking about the time 30 years ago on location for Boney Kapoor's Hum Paanch when our mum was there praying before every shot that Baba operation the camera for, and every shot that I would act."
The Azmi family finally has one director to its credit. For all her talent Shabana refuses to take the plunge. And Javed Akhtar keeps threatening to do every year.
