His capacity to do a complete switch-over from an action hero to a mature actor in serious roles has been immensely laudable, the fruits of which Ajay Devgan is still enjoying, and gaining a great deal from. Not many are aware though, that Devgan, who doesn't think twice before accepting a role with an unusual shade, unpredictable twist or beyond the macho man hero's concept (remember Thakshak, Lajja, Company or The Legend of Shaheed Bhagat Singh) is a stickler for discipline.
He also insists on the right combination of look – working his way down to the last detail when it comes to costumes and any other physical attribute that the character may require. Devgan has, in fact, preferred offbeat characters rather than stick to ‘hero' (as defined in Bollywood) roles in big projects. Even as a son, he is considered "most devoted, loving and caring" by his father, Veeru Devgan. His fire-brand mom-in-law Tanuja admires his, "calm reaction to weather any storm." In two of his forthcoming films, LoC and Qayamat, the actor has insisted on getting the ‘right look.'
In the former, where he plays Major Manoj Pandey from the Gorkha battalion who got a Param Vir Chakra, Devgan got his close-cropped look exactly the way the Pandey used to wear his hair. In Qayamat, which is a thriller, he dons the look of a modern day conman. The actor is also contemplating taking up direction and is often seen in the company of ‘good friend,' Ram Gopal Varma in earnest discussions. That's what we call a sincere actor with an honest effort at anything – be it his career, family or film direction.
