He says this is the best time to experiment with music and lyrics in Bollywood.
"This is a good time to be in the industry since filmmakers and audiences alike have become more open to unconventional and different kinds of lyrics and new type of sounds, " Kher told over phone from Mumbai.
The talented singer reveals that he entered the world of movies to explore new aspects of music.
"I was looking to expand my domain and dabble in other spheres along with singing and so I turned composer, " Kher said.
Kher, who shot to limelight with his song "Allah ke bande" in "Waisa Bhi Hota Hai - Part 2" has so far cut two successful albums - "Kailasa" and "Jhoom Re". His other film hits include "Ya Rabba" and "O Sikandar" amongst others.
The singer has teamed up with his band members Paresh and Naresh to produce "simple and soulful" renditions for his maiden venture "Dasvidaniya".
Releasing Nov 14, the film is a bittersweet situational comedy about a common man and his 'to-do list' in life. It stars Vinay Pathak, Ranvir Shorey, Rajat Kapoor and Neha Dhupia.
"We were signed to compose the music for the film after the producers heard the songs of our two albums. And we made sure we don't stick to a particular genre. We used our experience and kept the songs very simple to suit the character of the film, which is about a common man, " Kher said.
Kher is happy that the film's music has already generated a positive response from listeners.
"This is my first full-fledged film as a music director and I'm very happy that it has been accepted so well. The reviews are good especially for the song 'Mumma' which is being liked a lot by the listeners, " he added.
The film has three tracks out of which two songs have been crooned by Kher himself. And the lyrics of all the numbers are entirely his.
Apart from promoting "Dasvidaniya", Kher is currently busy judging contestants on popular musical reality show "Indian Idol".
So how is it playing judge?
"The experience as a judge on a show like 'Indian Idol' is great. This was a new world to me but I'm slowly getting used to it. I love being a part of this show, " he said.
Asked about his rapport with fellow judges - actress Sonali Bendre, veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar and composer Anu Malik - Kher said he was "extremely comfortable" with them.
Kher has also started work on his third album.
"We have already recorded two songs and are working on the other, " he revealed.
The singer and his bandmates are also composing music for forthcoming films like "Allah ke Bande" and "Rishton Ki Machine". He has also teamed up with music director trio Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy as a guest composer for "Chandni Chowk to China".
