"It is a genre that I have always loved and I had always wanted to attempt, " Gowariker said in a press statement.
Gowariker, who has mostly helmed larger-than-life or realistic films like "Lagaan", "Swades" and "Jodhaa Akbar", is trying his hand at comedy for the first time.
"My favourite films of this genre are 'Roman Holiday' and 'When Harry Met Sally', amongst several others. I'm also a great fan of 'Chupke Chupke' and all romantic comedies of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee, " he said.
Based on a Gujarati novel "Kimball Ravenswood" by noted playwright Madhu Rye, the film that revolves around a young Gujarati man in pursuit of his dream girl, who he must find within 10 days to save his family from an unforeseen ordeal, went on floors Saturday.
"What's Your Rashee?" is being jointly presented by UTV Motion Pictures and Ashutosh Gowariker Productions.
While the lyrics are being penned by Javed Akhtar, Nitin Desai is looking after art direction and Neeta Lulla has designed the costumes.
