One of the big winners at the weekend Filmfare awards was Abhay Deol starrer Dev D, which bagged a handful of
statuettes.
Now the poster boy of offbeat Hindi cinema is back with his new release, Indo-American
production Road, Movie. After premiering at the Toronto International Film festival and successful screenings on the
festival circuit in Tokyo and Berlin, this story of an Indian travelling cinema is about to hit the box office March 5th.
Deol explains the synopsis of the story, "In a really short pitch it's about a guy driving a truck through the desert
which he discovers is actually a moving cinema. In one line that would be the story.
Of course there are
many layers to the film. It is an adventurous story, about a protagonist maturing who has not been out there much.
He takes upon the responsibility of driving this truck, and we see what happens to him on the way, the kind of
people he meets, how they influence him and what he discovers about himself."
As the nephew of screen legend Dharmendra, Deol hopes to emulate the success of his uncle who was awarded a
lifetime achievement award at the IIFA's a few years ago, "As long as I am allowed to grow and learn new things I
will stay in the industry.
Longevity is something I would want if I am giving something creative. It is not
something I can predict or aim for but will come as a result of the work I do."
The actor is known for his alternative film choices Socha Na Tha, Ahista Ahista, Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd and
Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! considers how Indian film can crossover into mainstream success, "Bombay cinema needs
to expand its horizons in many ways.
As soon as you open up content ideas, you open up Bollywood
more for people of all sorts of backgrounds to partake of it".
Deol is all praise for his French descent Dev D co-star Kalki Koechlin, winner of the Filmfare award for female best
supporting actor, "For foreigners the difficulty can be language barriers. But with Kalki, she was born in India and
knows the language so has an advantage. She is Indian in that sense."
