Around 70 corporators from various political outfits, including the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) have jointly launched a signature campaign in this regard.
Politicians say the main objective behind such a camping was to make Bachchan realise his "duties and responsibilities towards his birth place."
"If he can become the brand ambassador of Narendra Modi-ruled Gujarat, then what's the problem in taking up the same job for Allahabad," asked Congress Corporator Mumtaz Ansari.
"He (Bachchan) agreed to become the ambassador of a state with which he had no relations. But it's not the case with Allahabad. He has very strong connections with the city," she told reporters Friday.
Politicians say if Bachchan were to become a brand envoy of Allahabad, it would immensely help it emerge on the tourist map much like Varanasi.
"First of all, the popularity of the Bollywood superstar would promote tourism in the city, which in turn contributes to its development.
"Likewise, other sectors in Allahabad are also bound to grow if Amitabhji lends his image to the city," another Congress corporator Upendra Singh said.
A number of social organisations have also joined the campaign that was launched Thursday. In the next two-three days, the letter, signed by the corporators, would be sent to Bachchan by post.
