His smooth voice and charming smile won him millions of fans throughout the world. Having shot to fame with Indian Idol, this charmer definitely has a multi-talented persona.

From being a dentist in Jharkhand, to his recent movie Badmaash Company, Meiyang Chang has traveled a long way and has done everything from singing to anchoring to acting, mesmerizing audiences with every avatar.

In a one-on-one chat with us, Chang tells us all about his upcoming movie, his fundas of life, and more...

Badmaash Company is all set to hit screens this May. Can you tell us something about your character in the movie?
I'm playing the character of Zing, who is from the North East. He is basically a happy go lucky fellow. He has plans and ambitions, and likes to do things his own way. Zing is also kind of a rebel. But he's the kind of guy who can do anything for his friends.

He trusts them completely and that is the reason that when Shahid Kapoor's character comes up with a plan, Zing is the first one to go along with him. Like many youngsters, he, too, faces an identity crisis. People tell him he is from China and things like that.

He also suffers from alcoholism, which may be because of the fact that he earns a lot of money in a very short time. He has a dream of owning a pub and he gets a lot more than that. Zing is a likable and relatable character.

You've enjoyed a different image so far. How has your character changed that?
People perceive me as a nice, cute, boy but the character of Zing takes me out of that perception. People will get to see me in a totally new avatar in this film.

Any other upcoming movies?
As of now I don't have any upcoming movies. The reason maybe that people have only seen me singing and anchoring so far, but they have never seen me acting and are not sure whether I'd be able to do it. Hopefully, after Badmaash Company, they will like my work and offer me good roles.

So do you find acting a viable career option for yourself?
Yes! I would love to take up more acting projects. And I hope people like me after watching me act. I had amazing experience while acting in this film and am keen on doing more films.

Now that the fifth season of Indian Idol has commenced, is there any message or advice you would like to give to the new lot of contestants?
I would like to tell them that apart from preparing yourself there are two things, which when kept in mind make everything else very easy. One is to be your self. Don't pretend to be cool or somebody you're not.

Second thing I would suggest is to be realistic about the whole thing. Remember that even if you don't win, things don't end there. You have already got a platform which is very important!

Are you following Indian Idol?
Yes I followed the first three episodes but missed the fourth. I would say Kolkata threw up some really good singers. They were really a class apart from the rest.

Judges are also fun loving. Sunidhi is a talented singer. Anuji is there of course. I have also met Salim personally and he certainly is a cool guy. He is able to connect to you through his youth appeal.

I really miss being on the show. I totally enjoyed the entire experience of being associated with the show. I do regret not being a part of it but at the same time I'm happy with the opportunities that have come my way.

How was the experience working with Shahid and Anushka?
Apart from the friendliness we shared it was also a learning experience with Shahid. You get to see his focus and dedication and you imbibe it in yourself. He had this thing of doing his best for the role he played and also helping out others when needed.

I've really enjoyed working with him. For Anushka I would say I'm extremely fond of her. She's an amazing and genuine human being. She is a very straightforward and honest person.

We also share that philosophy of working hard and at the same time enjoying what you do.

So it was great working with them. They both have the talent of being playful and serious depending on the situation.

From dentist to singer to anchor to finally an actor. How has the transition been?
It has been surprisingly smooth at every stage I would say. From anchoring to acting has been a pleasant transition. I did not have any acting experience earlier, apart from the little acts in school and college plays, but I was happy with the work I had done.

If I would be a dentist I might earn a lot but my life would be limited to a cabin and meeting 40 people a day. But what I'm doing now is simply amazing and I would not give that up for absolutely anything.
